When we hear CPR, we generally think of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, a step-by-step procedure used to help save a life during a cardiac emergency. As many of us know, while it may be easy to learn CPR, it’s challenging and, even overwhelming, to administer CPR on a person facing death. On those occasions that it works, everyone rejoices in the miracle of saving a life. Similarly, helping a family or single adult find affordable housing, get back on their feet financially, and ultimately defeat homelessness is very challenging and, may at times, seem unattainable, especially in 2020. But Emmaus continues to get the job done. During the pandemic, Emmaus has implemented its own CPR by being COMPASSIONATE to the needs of the guests; being PREPARED by developing solid plans during the weeks leading up to the pandemic and taking immediate action to ensure its clients’ safety when COVID struck; and building upon its staff and clients’ collective capacity to be RESILIENT throughout the duration of the pandemic. Here’s the good news – thanks to the dedicated and talented staff at Emmaus and their special brand of CPR, 78 households have been safely moved into permanent housing since the pandemic hit Massachusetts in March.
